I would like to move KODI and all of it's data to a new storage device. Does the device have to be bootable in OS X? Must the device contain OS X?

You can probably transfer your data. Search the forum and you'll find plenty of instructions for that. The app itself is OS specific. The current Mac version will only run on Mac OS X 10.7 or higher. You'll need to install the correct app for the device you are using.
