Single-Monitor Fullscreen Black Screen Problem

Hello all! I've been fighting with a problem for the past several days as I'm trying to set up Kodi in Linux Mint. I'm hoping someone with greater experience might be able to help.

First off, I'm running:

OS: Linux Mint 17.2
Software: Kodi 15.2
Video: AMD Radeon HD 5770
Video Driver: xserver-xorg-video-ati version 1:7.3.0-1ubuntu3.1
Processor: 3.4 GHz Quad-core AMD processor (I believe it's an FX-4100)
Memory: 8 GB
Display: An old off-brand HANNspree 25" 1920x1080 resolution TV, connected via the video card's HDMI port
MariaDB SQL Library (replacing prior MySQL setup)
Very restrictive UWF setup (it's the only really unusual thing I can think of doing to the computer)

I would classify myself as an experienced PC user (primarily Windows), but only intermediate in Linux. I've been away from Linux for a while, but re-learning as I move from Windows to Linux.

So, the problem is that I can't go fullscreen. When I try, the screen only goes black. Waiting doesn't help. The image never appears. I can usually hit the [\] key to return to windowed mode. On occasion, I'll have to jump over to tty1 to kill the Kodi process if it doesn't respond.

The problem was originally worse when I started troubleshooting - the computer becoming COMPLETELY unresponsive once fullscreen, but I switched to the driver listed above - a definite improvement.

When Kodi is fullscreen and black, I can hit the [Windows] key and pop up the OS menu over it. When the monitor preferences window is open, the little pop-up message identifying the screen remains over the top of Kodi. When I have Kodi configured to make noise (when navigating menus), I can hear it clicking along as I press buttons.

Interestingly, if I bring a second monitor over, plug it into the video card's first DVI port, and configure it as a second monitor, fullscreen mode works! Oddly, as I toggle fullscreen on and off with [\], it will sometimes appear on screen one in fullscreen mode and sometimes screen two in fullscreen mode. I haven't noticed a pattern to this behavior yet. When the screens are set up in mirrored configuration, however, black screen again.

I don't want to have to monopolize a second screen just to get Kodi to work. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the help. I'll continue tinkering with it, but it's getting quite frustrating.

Sorry, should have also included a debug log. I'm not sure whether this is a Kodi problem, but it would probably be useful as well. This log is from a new profile I created, removing things like the SQL implementation and addons from the equation. Less info to sift through as well. Only one monitor (the TV) is connected right now.

AMDs fglrx binary crap is not supported. Try with the OSS radeon driver.

Okay, after rebooting the machine I'm experiencing some odd issues with the monitor no longer being properly detected. The resolution is wrong and unable to be corrected in the GUI. I clearly have some other things to resolve before I come back, but I'll make sure that I'm using the proper driver (and return if the problems persist with the correct driver). Thanks guys!

Okay, I have no CLUE what was going on. I'd made the driver switch a while back (I was certain that it was several reboots ago), but in all the fiddling and testing of hardware, drivers, etc...something went wrong. I 'apt-get remove'd the fglrx driver. Then did a --reinstall of the open source driver. Now it works fine! Proper resolution. Monitor detected properly. Fullscreen works.

So once more, thank you both very much!

Ah, thank you again! I looked up the package and came across your forum thread detailing how to set up vdpau. I'll be stepping through getting that set up next. As I'm still figuring a lot of things out, I really appreciate the advice!

EDIT: Scratch that. If I understand correctly, all the steps in that other thread are no longer necessary as most of it's now integrated into Kodi.
