WD MY CLOUD ACCESS (PRIVATE SERVER)

No more port forwarding

I'd like to request a must have feature many would enjoy.

It doesn't have to be just WD My Cloud. Right now, we can access our files from home and play them straight from Kodi.

But when you're not home, you can't access that folder. To do so, it involves going into router, doing port forwarding, and how many people can do that?

With a simple web browser, sign in to https://www.wd2go.com/, all you have to do is adding your email address and password that give you access to your private server.

Imagine you no longer have to go through your router setting to add port forwarding, using insecure ftp, or don't even know what you're doing? That, all you have to do inside Kodi is to add your private server video folders is add https://www.wd2go.com/ then your email and password (BANG) You have access to your files just as you do at home.

Kodi is the way of the future. It plays everything. I have very good upload speed. Instead of trying to watch something from somewhere else that won't play when i have it seating there on my private network makes no sense. Sure I can go online and sign in to My Cloud and play the video I want to see. But I want to watch my thing using Kodi. We don't really have to do any of the port forwarding thing.

At least some of the MyCloud series supports WebDAV, which can already be used for this very purpose.

I have a MyCloud Mirror, and Kodi quite happily (give or take local network speeds) pulls stuff from it when I'm away and travelling. And as it's a upnp device, when the service is turned on locally it can talk with your router and sort out the port forwarding itself anyway (although I personally always go it manually just to be sure).

Also the site you mention is proprietary to WD, so it won't work with any other NAS manufacturer (and half the time it gives issues with WD drives, if you believe some of the threads on the WD forums).

Oh and thread moved to OS independent, as it's not specifically anything to do with Windows.

Thanks Darren

How did you setup the WebDav in Kodi? I'd like to know the steps to setup mine to. It'd be nice to play my files from within Kodi while away from home as well. I'm all about Kodi. WD My Cloud shows me my files while away from home but I have to use an app to play my movies. All I want is Kodi or nothing.

Thanks mate

When you add a new source, the option at the bottom should be "Add Network Location...". Use that, and two of the options available that you can cycle through at the top of the next screen are WebDAV server (HTTP) and WebDAV server (HTTPS).

Just use the relevant one there (depending on whether you've set your webdav up to use secure https or just normal http) and enter your server details and path, plus the port and the username/password config (the MyCloud user/pwd that you want to use, remembering that the given user must have access to the share that you're using as the WebDAV source).

Thanks! I'll try that. I'll let you know if I'm successful when I get home. This doesn't require port forwarding right? Thanks again

If your router has upnp then it should automatically do it.

I did forward the ports on my router though anyway to be certain.
