Solved Subtitles not showing up pt2
#1
As per this previous thread my subtitles have stopped working:
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=187645
I have been using subtitles for the last 12-14months without any issues until now.

As described in that thread I can find the subtitles using "Subscene, Opensubtitles, etc." but they will not populate as they used to, that is I can see they are enabled in the menu and look like they are present but they just do not display.
- this same issue happened two days ago and I uninstalled Kodi and then bought my favorites over from another PC and reinstalled Kodi again and it worked for a couple of days.

I have a hearing impairment and subtitles are important for me (or else I turn things up ridiculously loud and upset the neighbors) so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Debug log:

line 723 is the first error I noted.

For any that are interested.

Change:
I had made changes to advanced settings trying to take advantage of my HTPC (NUC5PPYH with RAM 8GB on FTTP) so I could actually stream 1080p files when I found them as the current settings did not seem to allow me to stream these file types with a lot of "buffering" occurring.

Following guides I made changes to the Video Buffering settings by creating an "advancedsettings.xml";

http://androidpcreview.com/fix-kodi-buff...ache/2611/
http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache

and or using the more Automated tool "Easy Advanced Settings" program;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dPYu9KqEtM

Outcomes:
In both of the above examples my Kodi seems to buffer the stream faster and any HD or HQ files seem to be playable (rather than the wait and buffer scenario) but my subtitles became broken.

Resolution:
The simplest solution is I have Kodi on my primary rig (no adnvancedsettings.xml at all) and have my favorites the same there and I simply copy my settings over, delete the Kodi settings folder on the HTPC and copy that over and then Kodi again searches, finds and displays subtitles as expected.

Observation:
The issue seems to be that after the creation of the advancedsettings.xml file I can play 1-2 files as expected but then Kodi is not displaying the subtitle files (it still searches and finds without issue) but it is having issues "creating the subtitle parser"?
23:08:03 T:4288 DEBUG: CFileCache::Open - opening <C:\Users\HTPC\Downloads\Subs\v.en.srt> using cache
23:08:03 T:4288 ERROR: CFileCache::Open - failed to open cache
23:08:03 T:4288 ERROR: CDVDPlayerSubtitle::OpenStream - Unable to create subtitle parser

Hopefully some more experienced eyes can review my findings and provide a more meaningful analysis and assessment?

Is it just a matter of "Clearing Cache to fix buffering issues?"

I seem to have found a resolution by trial and error more than anything.

The current settings I am using that are maintaining my subtitles and providing streaming of 1080p/HQ files with little to no buffering and ability to select anywhere in the movie and it commence streaming smoothly are below:

<advancedsettings>
<network>
<cachemembuffersize>1500000000</cachemembuffersize>
<readbufferfactor>4.0</readbufferfactor>
</network>
</advancedsettings>

Where I have allocated 1.5GB of the 8GB of system RAM to the cachemem buffer and I have increased my read buffer to 4.0 and everything is functioning as expected.

man i just came here and registered to tell you that you saved my life, i tried a lot of things also was about to upload the log the forum with any hopes of being answered, but i recalled that i also modified the advance settings file in the past to improve my buffering, thank you for the help. I modified the file to your parameters and it solved my problem.

I'm glad it was helpful to someone else.

Since this post I have taken it a little further:

<advancedsettings>
<network>
<cachemembuffersize>1500000000</cachemembuffersize>
<readbufferfactor>20.0</readbufferfactor>
</network>
</advancedsettings>

Honestly though I haven't noticed any increase in the buffering going from the 4.0 to the 20.0 and when I had to reinstall Kodi on the same HTPC after OS upgrade (Win7 to Win10) I have since left it at 4.0.
