Make a backup of ~/Library/Application Support/Kodi before updating. When you update, any incompatible addons will be disabled. Some of these may be addons you don't want to lose and you might want to revert back to your present version until they get updated.
The actual update is fairly simple. Just download the installer and launch it. You'll get a window with the new Kodi app and a alias of your Applications folder. Drag the Kodi app to the applications folder. That's it. When you launch the app it will be the new version. There will likely be quite a few addons that will also have to be updated depending on what your present and new versions of Kodi are.
