Current state on encrypted DVD/BD playback on Kodi using add-on

Such software is soon depreciated and you are forced to pay for an upgrade every few years just to decrypt and unscramble your new BD titles.

At this time, hardware based players have firmware updates made available as required by new BD decryption schemes.
I've not heard of any hardware based player being depreciated in a similar maner to PC based software players (guess it's just a matter of time).

As i see it the only solution is software based systems built on open source software using title and/or player key files.
The only question is how and where one gets the title/player key files Huh

I use redfox anydvd hd to remove the encryption. This is a onetime purchase, cheaper than powerDVD, and it has a lifetime license (you can buy cheaper, renewable, licences).

This removes all protections, and gives the correct playlist in case of screenpass protection (many playlists to choose from). Needs a windows pc. Once anydvd has done it's thing, you can play the iso on any Kodi (mac, libreelec, rpi, ...).

Such an addon would hopefully negate the need to periodically find keys and it would hopefully be outside of Kodi's responsability.

If you play the encrypted iso, on a windows pc, with anydvd hd installed, then Kodi kan play this iso as if it is ripped (anydvd removes the encryption on the fly).

Disclamer: I live in the EU. It is completely legal here to make a copy (for own use only!) of a dvd/bluray you bought, even if it has copy protection. Might be different in the place you live, please check...

PS: I seriously don't understand why you guys want to play encrypted discs (don't you have 1 windows machine?). Using a ripper such as anydvd (preferred) or dvdfab is so much easier...
Add-on : Bluray iso utils Rewrite of BR_iso_enhancements
Add-on : BR_iso_Enhancements Give theatrical & directors cut from the same bluray iso each their own library entry, use bluray iso's of tv shows as if they are already ripped.

No joke!

Ace! Ace! Ace! Ace! Ace! Ace!

@ix400, looks like you should get ready to make that donation of chocolate and money, because Ace have now submitted a pull request to master / Kodi v18 (Leia) which at least adds enables BD-J support on Win32:

https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/11836

Note however that this does not mean that encrypted Blu-ray Discs will work out of the box (which would require that also libaacs and libbdplus would be included and enabled which each build of Kodi), see dicussion:

http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=230493

BDJ support will however bring us one step closer to full Blu-ray Disc support in Kodi.

... oh, I am not using Windows Confused. Will this solution find its way into libreelec?

Yes that solution should be platform-independent long as all the dependencies are met, so yes it should work under all operating-systems .

If you can't wait for Kodi v18 then maybe could test exterimental LibreELEC builds from Milhouse which will surley get this in it soon:

http://milhouse.libreelec.tv/builds/master/

Not however sure if he has enabled it and added the dependecies is his builds yet but he is usually quick to add new features/functions.

https://github.com/MilhouseVH?tab=repositories

Don't think there are many Kodi developers using Windows either anymore as most are probably Linux / LibreELEC users themselves(?).

@ix400 it could possibly already be in libreelec, from memory libaacs and libbdplus are enabled in Linux builds. You would just need the keyfile.

FYI, libaacs have been added to mainline Kodi, so now only libbdplus for BD+ support is missing.

Then you (either manually or through an addon) would only have to provide your own key-file to make Kodi play BD+ protected discs.

For BD+ it's not that easy. Libbdplus is no help in its current state. Keyfiles are for libaacs.
