Looks like some official Vu+ developers might have picked up support for a Kodi port/fork in their "OpenVuPlus" open source firmware and begun improving it:

The port/fork was initially started by an independent developer calling mx3L. mx3L who began porting Kodi earlier this year

as @Mamamia above noticed, vuplus created their own patch to support kodi 16. This patch brings some improvements, mainly there is no crash anymore on exit from Kodi and there is also reduced spamming in log by alsa which seams to bring little performance improvement.

I took this patch and apply changes on it which are mentioned...

While this is not the first XBMC/Kodi port to Vu+ (pronounced VuPlus), this is the first port/fork that official Vu+ developers looks to have shown any interest in.

A I read, it sounds as if no port/fork have ever gotten hardware accelerated video decoding to work inside Kodi's internal video player on Vu+ hardware.
