Suggestion: Custom Remote Control Script

Hey all,

I've been thinking a bit. Could we create a script that would capture the IR codes being broadcast by remotes and place them in keymap.xml?

Practically what this would allow us to do is set up our Xbox to work with any remote of our choosing.

I'd envisage that you would select, for example 'Up' the xbox would then capture incoming IR codes. You'd transmit one, and it would add the code to the keymap.xml for 'up'

and so on.

This would allow us to effortlessly customise any remote we like. Perhaps even, with the correct remote, allow us to operate our TV/DVD and XBMC from the same remote control.

I'm not quite sure whether this is technically possible - but it sounds like it should be....

The remote has to use RC5 protocol as that is the only IR-signals that the Xbox IR-dongle hardware can recieve http://xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.ph...te_Control

And those apparently are not common (outside of the US at least).

What about RC6 which is philip's enhanced version of RC5....Will that still work?

I'm thinking of a specific remote here:

Sky Digital remotes to be specific. If you're in the UK they are currently available at Poundland for £1! :-)

Actually the Xbox uses the RCA protocol, not RC5, so no.

Either way, I can understand the practical value of this script, though maintaining it would be kind of a pain in the ass since ostensibly some of the available functions change and new ones are added over time.

True. It also doesn't seem like too hard a project.

I'd have worked on it myself by now but my python isn't quite good enough for xbox coding yet (I'm currently teaching myself the basic syntax of the language).

Has anyone any recommendations for books/tutorials for python and any especially useful tutorials for the xbox?

Currently I'm working my way through the tutorials on python's own website.

I've also started reading up on tkinter. Give me a while and I'll hopefully be a regular python programmer Wink got a lot of learning to do first.
