Need help with my weak network

Hi all, I've got a new Raspberry Pi 3 setup with openelec. I've used Kodi before on desktop installs under windows and linux in the past, so i'm not entirely new to it, but I've never had to deal with over wifi before. I've got 2 problems with my setup: Firstly, the 150mbps N wifi on the Pi is a little weak and it's setup a good distance away from the wifi router. So when streaming movies or music it can sometimes hiccup, and sometimes just get stuck and exit out of the movie. The other is my internet connection is 1.5mbps, so even when viewing youtube from a wired connection in a browser, I need to watch in 480p, or at least let the 720 or 1080 stream buffer for a good while before starting playback. I will be investigating possible better antennas for the pi, or an access point solution, but regardless... I'm wondering if there is a way to configure Kodi to buffer files considerably more, so that even in the event of a brief loss of signal, everything plays back smooth. I'd also like to configure youtube to default to 480p if possible. Digging around in the menus, I haven't found those settings, is this possible?

You can try limiting the bandwidth inside Kodi and see if that will prevent the Youtube add-on from playing anything higher than 480p. Limiting the bandwidth will force some add-ons to play a lower bitrate stream, but I've never tried it with the Youtube add-on.

System->Settings->System->Internet Access

I believe the Internet Access settings only display when the Settings are at Advanced or Expert level.

There is a problem with onboard wifi in the Rpi3. I've found it basically unusable in Kodi/Openelec/Libreelec

You could possibly try to fix it like this
http://openelec.tv/forum/88-wlan/80389-r...lan-issues

Or install one of the test builds mentioned in that thread where the issue has been fixed.

Or the easiest solution is to just use a separate wifi dongle (people mention some good adpaters for the rpi3 towards the end of the thread)

Or get a powerline kit.

Playing with the Cache settings was what I needed to do! So far so good! Thanks! A powerline adapter would be a good idea too, but I'm not certain that the router and the raspberryPi are on the same breaker or circuit. I'll have to investigate that later.

I'm using YouTube plugin version 5.2.2
Highlight the Youtube addon from the video section.
Press "i" on your keyboard or right-click your mouse and choose "addon information"
Choose "Configure" which is the top button on the left side of the window
On the "General" tab, change the default "Video Quality" to 480p.
