Yep, 4k or bust... Project looks promising, but pricy! diy project would cost a lot less.

It is pricey vs diy which would probably come in at around $50-$60 with an arduino, lights, power supply and all the little bits required.

I'm not sure how much extra it would cost to diy it yourself for capturing external sources though, adding in capture hardware, HDMI splitters etc.

I would gladly like to see new tier without pixels and their support, one HDMI, no additional gadgets. Just illumination module and the price below $100.

That kind of thing already exists at around that price point e.g. http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=280039

Or you can diy it for even less.

Or even the original lightpack (although it's not great value anymore) http://store.lightpack.tv/products/lightpack

The new additional gadgets for capturing any source over HDMI (plug and play) is the big selling point for the new version.

But you see - there's too much work needed. I don't have time for DIY and "trial and error" approach. And from what I understand previous version of Lightpack didn't work on different HDMI sources. By additional gadgets Io was thinking about some mood apps or something similiar. HDMI Plug&Play is kinda core feature for me here. Smile

I just want enough pixels to build a tv. Lets see 1920x1080x$39

$80m

Maybe not

Yeah I get that, plug and play is the big selling point. The majority of others (let's call them gen 1) communicate directly with your kodi box that ran extra software to control the lights.

There are a few others that are plug and play but I don't think they are quite as refined (e.g. single HDMI, less zones/leds):

https://www.ambivision.tv/index.php/order : $155+
https://lightberry.eu/shop/shop/lightberry-bundle-2/ $155+
http://www.dreamscreentv.com/shop/ $140+

I don't think were going to see an out the box with HDMI capture hardware sub $100 for a while unfortunately.

I backed the first-generation DreamScreen on Kickstarter (however I have now yet recieved it so cannot comment on quality or performance so far), but unfortunately I read that the HDMI splitter they ship with does not support either CEC, ARC, or HEC which is a big let down, though on the upside the HDMI-splitter in their solution is not integrated so you can just replace it with one that does

http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=257844

For the next and next-next-generation the bonus with these companies launching their product via Kickstarter is that they get loads of feedback from backers with improvement ideas on what paying users want in future products if such improvements can not be added to the current generation.

DreamScreen have already said that they are already working on the next-generation which will support 4K resolution @ 60 FPS, WiFi connection for Smart Phone app control (instead of via Bluetooth), and other than that also having more and brighter LEDs.

What does it do with letterboxed content? Like 4:3 or 2.35:1/2.4:1?

That's a very good question.

When your using current gen ones it depends on the software and the video file playing. For example most will work if your video is encoded without black bars e.g. 1920x880 and some have border detection for video encoded with black bars e.g 1920x1080.

I would assume lightpack 2 has implemented some sort of border detection in there built in processing but it's something they need to clarify officially.

Can't answer for this new Lightbox 2, but DreamScreen is suppose to automatically detect all letterboxing and automagically handle all letterbox formats on-the-fly with integrated smarts.

From their FAQ http://www.dreamscreentv.com/faq/

"What if I watch TV on Widescreen?

Our DreamScreen HDMI stick is so smart it already knows if you’re watching in widescreen. The lights will react to the colors on the very edge of the screen, creating the DreamScreen effect. DreamScreen is able to automatically identify letter boxing when on widescreen mode. Irrespective of the size of the black bars on the top and bottom of the tv screen, DreamScreen looks at the content right below and above these bars respectively. The mode of switching is automatic. If you start watching a movie in widescreen mode, DreamScreen will automatically detect it and switch within 6 seconds.

You should should submit the question to Woodenshark via their Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/woo...k&mode=FAQ

I wonder if that looks weird... Having the black bars in the image and then having the diffuse colored glow outside that.

It does not. I use this on v1 with the lightpack service add-on that adjusts profiles based on video resolution.

It definitely doesn't look weird or out of place, but it does look nicer when it's not letter boxed.

What about frame packed 3D? I think it would have problems with TAB/SBS 3D...
