Android [Shield] Kodi does not play at 4K (It downscales to 1920x1080)
#1
Hello Kodi Community,

I am new here and I hope I will post this in the right category.

I have a strange problem which just seem to have started a short while ago.

I have a Nvidia Shield, and installed Kodi (16,1) on it.

Now, on the Windows version of Kodi I can set the screen resolution. On the android version I cannot.
The Nvidia Shield can output 4k at 60hz (through hdmi 2.0) and my television (a Samsung UE55JU6400K) is also 4k.

Kodi just plays ALL my stuff at a screen resolution of 1920x1080.
Even if the video resolution of some my video's are 3840x2160:

If I adjust the videosetting to "original size" than the video is zoomed in by a factor of 2:

So why is there no video resolution setting in the android version of Kodi?

The Nvidia Shield works native just fine with 4k.

Maybe I am wrong but it seems that your TV is seen as 1920*[email protected] even if it is a 4K TV

Are you sure that the HDMI port You use is HDMI 2.0?

Maybe your TV has 4 HDMI but only one HDMI 2.0 and 3 HDMI 1.4
Moanbag is in da place!

The Nvidia Shield does see the tv as a 4K tv.

It's just Kodi which won't run 4K video's in 4K resolution.

SPMC (wiki) is in active development and the author is quite responsive, perhaps this is best handled in that forum? http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=264102

I have looked into that topic, it's quiet a big topic, but it seems this problem is known?

What's the best course of action? Wait for a Kodi update or install an older version of Kodi? (The last option is something I don't know how to do).

I did the pic test and can read the purple text. so, does this mean kodi is playing at 4k. Then why does it say on the info that it's downsizing it to 1080. Like this.. (3840,2160)->(1920,1080)

Any thoughts ??

Is that menu/overlay coming from your TV or Kodi?

Since you are using a Shield, you could run the SPMC GUI in 4k as well (I think in SPMC -> Settings -> Video output). It doesn't explain this mystery, but it would be one way to be sure you are always getting 4k ;)

Because Kodi and friends have no notion of the video running at a different "logical" resolution than the GUI, and the GUI resolution (1080p) is assumed everywhere.
The same kind of ranting comes in since the days the amlogic boxes were running gui in 720p and the video in 1080p (read: ages).

I've installed SPMC( ver 16.3 ) from Google Play Store. Same problem as Kodi. It still says (3840,2160)->(1920,1080).

Also, for SPMC->Settings->Video Output. I've set it as "unlimited". Tried "Auto". Same result. The other choices are 1080 and 720.

Any thoughts ??

it's working !!

After I restarted shield tv, SPMC( ver 16.3 ) is working and playing 4K movies at their native resolution. (3840x2160)->(3840x2160).

Kodi( ver 16.1 ) is still playing them downscaled. (3840x2160)->(1920x1080).

Thank you for recommending SPMC.

For me the same thing. Laugh

After installing SPMC, adjusting a few settings (see below) and restarting two times 4K video's are now played in their native resolution again. I couldn't be happier.

well, i haven't changed anything but today SPMC started to downscale 4K movies again. (3840x2160)->(1920x1080). I've re-installed, re-started many times but same issue.

This is very frustrating to say the least.

Snowwie - Is yours still working ? Any thoughts..
