Building low budget, low power Kodi media center - AMD?
#1
Hey guys,

I'm in the works of building a low cost, low power Kodi media center. I am going to be replacing the current desktop that I have in place of a much smaller form factor(mini itx) and one that will be far less power consumption.

I'm looking at using the AMD A6-6400K CPU(seems like A10-6700T is better in terms of power), however I am also debating about using an athlon 5350. The reason I'm considering the athlon is due to the lower power consumption and cost.

Is Kodi more CPU intensive or is it GPU?

Heres an intel build i've created, seems decently priced. I've got SSD already so only am in need of case cpu and memory

Wouldn't something like that be better for your needs?

Don't go AMD whatever you do. Crap drivers, crap support. Intel or nvidia.

I have been thinking about the same processor for years. If you try it let me know how it works out. Fry's Electronics has that processor on sale once in a while too.

Just looked on Google and found this

wait for Bristol Ridge if AMD or Kaby Lake for Intel - more future proof 10bit HEVC support and maybe VP9

Will change with Bristol ridge. And btw. we brought AMD a long way on linux. With very, very good support by the AMD OSS devs, it works quite nicely already.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

Great to hear about AMD support. I like options when I shop. For me it's not about getting the biggest or fastest, it's about getting the biggest bang for the buck.

@fritsch: can you explain why it will change with b.ridge? thought the problems come from driver, not the hardware.

@fritsch could you confirm me if on nvidia GTX950 working HEVC 10bit ? 4k ?

@piotrasd: works on windows only
@Ed76: former amd hardware was not nearly doing the same as intel hw with same power usage. Bristol ridge will have a hevc 10 bit decoder and using low power.

Thats driver limitation and they maybe change that ?

HQ scalers like Lanczos3 and HD audio also ?

Im thinking add propper GPU card (for hw 4k, HEVC 10bit) to unRAID nad create VM on LibreELEC
or just buy small box (like NUC etc.) or pc mini-itx with maybe Bristol ridge or Kaby lake

BTW/ Apollo lake back to live ? http://www.cnx-software.com/2016/07/15/i...-released/
