I am running ubuntu 16.04, and kodi autostarts on tty1 with x11. When I want to switch to my unity session on tty7, all I get is a black screen. When then going back to kodi the same happens, just a black screen, until I kill kodi, then switching works as expected. Ideas where this might come from? Xserver or kodi problem?

Xserver issue in combination with the drivers you are running. But as you did not provide a single logfile, nobody can tell.
