Is there any way to disable the thumbnails for pictures?

You could remove the thumbpanel and/or the thumbs from the list views.

But the thumbnails are still generated in the background though, right? I have many folders of pictures that contain MB's or GB's of data; I don't want all that data going over my wireless network to generate thumbnails that I don't even want. Isn't there a way to disable thumbnail generation entirely?
