When installing kodi 16.1 I get a message 'The feature you are trying to use is on a network source that is unavailable.'.Then it says it cannot find path for 'vc_red.msi.has anybody got a clue what I can do

Not a common problem, could you download Kodi from the link to downloads at top left of the forum page and try again, ensure a comnplete install.
