hello!

- windows with movies in shared folder
- openelec on pi always worked via smb

suddenly now is asking me for a password to access the smb shared folder?

tried the windows user name and password = not working
tried homegroup password = not working

what shall I do, and why is this happening with no reason?

Have a look here - probably the answer to your question.
The situation is probably occasioned by an update (likely Windows security update)

Which OS are you using?

In LibreELEC make sure samba password is turned off in libreelec settings> services.

I just checked my recently updated Pi 1. libreelec milhouse 1022 with kodi 17 beta4.
You are correct: the password that used to work is not accepted anymore.

Windows can access the RPi via smb.

I reverted to milhouse 1018 and it works.

Upgraded to milhouse 1024 samba now working.

I recently found that if Samba password authentication was turned on in LE and using a username and password of my choice, that LE can browse the Windows shares without a username and password. However, in that case, browsing from Windows to LE requires authentication, with the aforementioned credentials.
