ARMv8A 64bit builds for Android
#1
I just read the Kodi Beta 4 release notes and saw the builds for ARMv8A 64-bit Android.

Does anyone know any android streaming devices in the market having this processor arch?

Thanks

Nvidia Shield.

For device with ARM SoCs it would be anything with Cortex-A35, A53, A57, A72 or A73.

Just a clarification : 90% of the boxes sold today have a chip that supports aarch64, but it looks that surprisingly few of them have an android version supporting aarch64, the shield being indeed the one I am 100% sure.

For the techies, look into logcat. Kodi shows the ABI's supported by the box.

I have used armv8 64 build since the first build on FireTV 2, it works great. The only issue is random crash I reported before http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=294987. This random crash also happen to the v7 build, but seems in v8 64, it's more often (not that often, though).

No, the standard ARM version will run on it just fine.

When SATV automatically upgrades to the new beta, it would remain on the 32 bit version, so one would have to 're'install the 64bit version, if I'm not mistaken?

Is there truly any benefit between the two, or is it more about being future ready?

Did anyone try (Or know if they might work) the Fire TV 1 and Fire TV 1 Stick?

I am going to update my Fire TV 2 and have just updated the Shield which works really well with the latest nightly.

Are there any noticeable advantages or disadvantages running the 64bit version (on the Shield)?

I installed ARMv8A on Fire TV 2. Looking at the kodi.log I see this -

18:29:38.594 T:367916090016 NOTICE: ARM Features: Neon disabled

Looking at the kodi.old.log with the 32bit build, I see this -

15:20:45.980 T:18446744072288705456 NOTICE: ARM Features: Neon enabled

Does anyone know why the Neon feature is being shown as "disabled" on the 64-bit build?

That's a cosmetic bug in Kodi. All aarch64 architectures have NEON.
