I think at least it should be possible to pass through DV since the metadata is supposedly buried in BTB(or was it WTW, or both?), if one can isolate the metadata.

At least Calman is able to calibrate DV modes with normal GFX cards (they only support Intel officially).

I don't know whether Kodi demuxes and passes the elementary stream to the decoder or not.

Dolby Vision employs 8-bit RGB tunneling and I don't think you can isolate the metadata easily. xvYCC is the one that uses 0-15 and 236-255. Where did you read that Dolby Vision metadata is carried in 0-15 range?

Calman also employs the same RGB tunneling to generate Dolby Vision test patterns.

You're right. It was xvYCC. I'm getting too old to remember all the details alwaysSmile (and there are so many in this dawn of the HDR-age)

If Kodi could read the metadata from the files, it should also be able to generate the RGB tunneling correctly, but I'm not sure the details are available from Dolby. Probably notWink
But in concept this is kinda like DSD over PCM.

My point being is (internally) Kodi doesn't support HDR yet, and as long as Kodi doesn't support HDR and playing back HDR is more or less handing over the file/stream to a buggy SOC and pray for the best, then HDR is going to stay half assed for a long time. (Plus you can't sort your library by SDR/HDR10/DV etc)

So I got around to making SDR downloads off YouTube of both HDR files provided and putting them onto the same USB key so I could directly A-B compare what should be HDR and SDR versions. ...Yeah so the HDR files no longer work off USB on my TV. They totally worked the last time I posted in this thread but it seems that Samsung issued some firmware update on the 11th or so and it has since broken.

Lemme double check. I'll rewrite the files tot he USB key. It's possible they both got corrupted some how and I assigned fault tot he wrong thing.

Nope, not sure what's up with it, but my UN65KU6290FXZC flat out can't read those HDR files off USB anymore. It reports them as being incompatible.

Try Exodus file from the kodi wiki. This is what I tested. Never did figure out how to d/l hdr from youtube but if you briefly explain I'll try it as well. (just to eliminate if something went wonky with that source)

I know our models are different but maybe the versions are the same. Mine is v.1464 fwiw.

Well, the good news is that file DOES work on the TV and it does ding up an 'HDR' icon in the corner to let me know it's playing an HDR source. Though I wish I had an SDR sample that's identical so I can do A-B comparison

The World in HDR
The Redwoods

They will not play on the Shield (only audio) or the X9S. They will play on the Mi Box (no HDR). Only the Chromecast Ultra and Samsung 2016 UHD TVs will play YouTube HDR. The Shield is now outdated No

@DJ_Izumi: can you try these clips on your new Samsung TV?

Those clips are diffrent then i downloaded. (same videos but they are in vp9 format. The videos that i downloaded are in h264) Also when played with mpc-hc they has washed picture like any hdr video. Madvr didnt convert them to sdr (still washed out picture with madvr) Also tried them on LG C6 but same result. Tv did not engage hdr mode just give me washed out picture.

Please try the Kodi HDR project. It unlocks the grey files to show their beauty. This is fairly new beta....Google it and you will see it. Love to know if your vp9 file would work as well.......
