Best connection for digital audio
#1
Hello, not sure this is the right section anyway...

So basically my problem is to understand the best possible connection between:

- Intel NUC with 1 only HDMI out (kodi/libreelec)
- stereo ampli ( Advance Acoustic X-i60 with internal dedicated DAC and digital inputs (no HDMI only SPDIF or coax))
- TV (SONY hx855).

I'm not interested in multichannels (5.1 etc).

I could connect: NUC (via hdmi) --> TV (via SPDIF) --> ampli

OR

NUC (via hdmi) --> AUDIO extractor/splitter --> (via SPDIF) stereo ampli
.....................................................................--> (via HDMI) TV

I can enable the pass through (sony tv will decode the audio signal and the ampli will manage internally the conversion).

Will be the second audio signal better? in case..much better?

many thanks!
Andrea

I currently go from my Intel NUC to the TV via hdmi, then I use my TV's optical out to link to my soundbar. The only issue I ran into is that whilst the soundbar can handle 5.1 Dolby Digital, the TV doesn't always seem to pass it through correctly. However since it's just a stereo soundbar I just limit the output to PCM stereo and everything works well.

Hi looun,
I won't use a USB port.

The splitter/audio extractor would be this one: https://www.amazon.it/dp/B01LGIX5HY/ref=...0D9A&psc=1 Input is HDMI; outputs are HDMI to TV and optical to ampli.

I'd like to understand which connection (first or second) performs better audio quality. In other words, adding the TV to the chain is an unnecessary step that will degrade the quality?

Additionally, there are other relevant considerations that I'm missing? Suggestions?

thanks!
