v17 anyone using Roomie/Simple Control remote with v17?
#1
Hi,

I am using the Simple Control remote (formerly Roomie) on my iphone with my Nvidia Shield.

When using Kodi v16, Simple Control automatically discovers kodi and sets up a default remote using ip control. Part of the remote functionality is displaying the (and I am not going to explain this well) movie 'time' information - much like you see on via the on screen osd. i.e. duration, where you currently are, time wise, in the movie, etc.

I am not able to get the remote working with v17. No auto disovery and if I manaully enter the ip address (port 8080) to the device playing kodi, the remote does not work.

I got in touch with Simple Control support and there response was:

"We were able to test against Krypton on macOS and Windows and it is working fine there. This is likely related to the Android version from Kodi. We follow the standard Kodi protocols for control."

I am not able to get in working with the windows version of v17 either, so not sure if there is user error on my end or if the support guy I was communicating with is mistaken on them having it working with v17.

I guess, the questions are:

1. is anyone using simple control with v17 successfully? If so, did you have to do anything special to get it working?
2. is v17 any different in its use with ip control vs. v16?

So is seems zeroconf in not implemented on kodi for android? I guess that probably explains why it won't auto discover.

I see in the services --> control section, there is an "Allow remote control from applications on other systems" option. I am assuming this would need to be enabled for the remote to work? When i try turn this on I get a message/modal:

"Remote communication server

Failed to start"

After 'okaying' out of the modal, Kodi freezes and I need to do a force stop from within the apps section on the shield.

Below is the log file.

Any thoughts on whether "Allow remote control from applications on other systems" needs to be enabled for remote to work? And if so, why I am getting the error?

Thanks.

Please use pastebin.com or somewhere similar for logs. Do not post them directly here, as they bloat the forum server database unnecessarily and are easier to manipulate and review there.

I’ve found a solution after upgrading my HTPC to Windows 10. As I no longer have WMC, I have used MCEControl to start Kodi, and the rest works. Here’s what to do.
1. Enable http remote access in Kodi, add a username and password, and change the port number from 8080 to 80 (that's what SimpleControl uses)
2. Install MCEControl (if not already installed)
3. Open MCEControl.commands (found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Kindel Systems\MCE Controller) and paste the following

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<MCEController xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<Commands xmlns="http://www.kindel.com/products/mcecontroller">
<StartProcess Cmd="MCESTART" File="C:\Program Files\Kodi\Kodi.exe">
</StartProcess>
</Commands>
</MCEController>

4. Save and start MCEControl
5. Change the Kodi Start command in SimpleControl to point to Microsoft Media Player MCE Controller device and use the command MCE START

Kodi will now start and work, including shut down.
