The S912 uses BIGGER numbers in it marketing so it has to be the better Android Box right ?

WRONG

99% of AMLogic S912's are rubbish. Running buggy test Firmware. The sellers simply don't care about Firmware quality. They take your money and run.

LibreELEC Kodi on a S905/905x is far far superior.

Yes you right but the major problem is the WiFi which is poor 2,4Ghz on S905(x) with oldy MALI 450... This is not very very very loud

If you're looking for a media player - the performance of the VPU is far more important than the GPU isn't it? The MALI 450 is the GPU not theVPU. As long as it can render the UI reasonably nicely (which it can), what is the limitation of the 450? It's not like the Mali is doing hardware acceleration of the video decoding (the VPU does that). I guess scaling is the one area it might make a difference?

Nothing wrong with the Mali 450 GPU for use as a media player, unless you are a serious 3D games user, where really a XBOX or PS3 is a better option anyway.

Yes its the VPU that does all the Hardware decoding heavy lifting and when you can do up to 2160p (4K) HEVC @60Hz with AMLogic S905's its not lacking in capability there either. Plus when you can run LibreELEC and can Resolution switch properly 1080p > 2160p with AML S905 - scaling is not much of an issue either, leave the a 4K TV do it.

Buying just on Raw Tech specs is pretty pointless if you (a) have no particular A/V content to actually feed the media player in the first place and (b) if Firmware support is lacking to actually make the tech specs usable anyway.

And about the WiFi ? An oldy 2.4Ghz WiFi without any antenna frankly today its very difficult to choose this device I mean any s905. I look for buy one but frankly I can't !

I stream movies from PC to box/TV and some 1080p or 4k and with this old one is it impossible without lagging. I see that the TX8 s912 of friend connect to 230Mbps to WiFi 5Ghz where I can just have 54 or 65 Mbps in 2.4Ghz...

I'm not specialist but I think you can not advise this, you can not advise seriously to buy this crap, and both 905/912 are scrap. 905 for power, 912 for his actual firmware this is what I think.

Finally the only decent one to buy today is the Nvidia Shield TV 2017 (you can install Zulu Full Nougat mod...) but its very expensive one

Trouble is no one wants to spend money....for something that actually has decent Firmware

Devices with AC WiFi:

Amazon FireTV2
Xiaomi Mi Box
WeTeK Hub
MINIX U9-H
ODROID C2 with a USB AC WiFi dongle.
RPi's with a USB AC WiFi dongle.

Maybe you should get an USB ethernet adapter. 905(x) has been great for me so far. Wifi is always discouraged here. Wired is better. Even with the stock 100mbs port, 45gb 4k movies are playing perfectly for me from my NAS. Putting LibreElec on it might not be for everybody, but I've even been getting great performance out of the one I left on android.

I can't say I've tried a s912. After what I've read here, I think I'll wait until it's ready for prime time.

I just bought a TX8 S912 and I can see that it reboot alone sometimes.
I play movie and the box restart alone sometimes when fast forward, play/pause back forward pause play moves or for nothing.
There is no any overheating nor addons nor any tweak just brand new out of the box
"Firmware test keys" -->>> build q201-userdebug.6.0.1.MHC19J 20161210 test keys

Well, I lost my time, I think at this price its better to buy a SHIELD TV

Frankly if you care about having a media player you will use wired ethernet. Besides there is no point in really good wifi if the media playing is mediocre or worse.

I think so but What about 230Mbps WiFi speed and 100Mbps LAN ?
Reply

The lan works much better for me. Also the general consensus here is the LAN is better for any streaming or network play. Wifi usually also works well for me, but you should try to avoid it until you're up and running.

Edit: Also USB 2.0 is 480 mbs and you can use a gigabit usb adapter. They aren't much at a certain, largest online retailer.

Yes WiFi is the last resort if you have even 100M Ethernet available.

AC WiFi is the best followed by Dual Band 2.4/5GHz N WiFi

Which means little on any device if it has Rubbish Firmware running on an unstable box.

I will repeat again an AMLogic S905 running LibreELEC Kodi, Ethernet connected is the best bang for the buck Kodi only media player out there at the moment.

AMLogic boxes need to use ASIX chipset USB > Ethernet adapters for compatibility. Bear in mind these adapter are usually 100M anyway.

No more advice will be given in this thread if people still buy rubbish AMLogic S912's contrary to all the warnings given Sad

You obviously have very basic 2.0 Audio and Kodi requirements.

But when the next person comes along and asks why on their AML S912 GT1 does Kodi Krypton:

- basic 5.1 DTS Audio passthrough not work ?
- Deinterlacing for OTA TV streams is not reliable ?
- Kodi dynamic refresh switching is broken ?
- VC-1 and mpeg4 video does not play properly or reliably ?
- DVD playback is not working properly ?
- and if they are real demanding Kodi users - why is there no HD Audio passthrough ?
- or why does Resolution switching 1080p > 2160p(4K) not work ?

All the above actually work reliably on a AML S905(x) with LibreELEC Kodi Krypton.

On top of that then you have No HD/4K DRM out of the box video streaming from Netflix, HBO & more on any AML S912's.
