v17 Kodi 17.1 crashing on start-up after upgrading from Kodi 16
#1
I just upgraded from Kodi 16 to 17.1 (by installing the new version over the old one) but now Kodi crashes right on start-up (standard Windows crash dialogue: "Kodi has stopped working. Check online for a solution and close the program...").

I've already tried starting Kodi with a clean userdata folder (by renaming %APPDATA%\Kodi into %APPDATA%\Kodi.old) but it's still crashing so I believe it cannot be due to any addons or skins or such.

I can see the following log files in my Kodi:
  • kodi_crashlog-17.1 Git_20170320-fc1619b-20170423-000454.dmp: cannot read this file, lots of gibberish
  • kodi_stacktrace-17.1 Git_20170320-fc1619b-20170423-000454.txt (see: https://pastebin.com/RLrppPyK) has nothing much in there
  • kodi.log (see: https://pastebin.com/qcNfZnLa) shows lots of "CWin32DirectSound::GetSpace - buffer underrun" warnings.

Can anyone help here?

I don't know anything about your system or hardware other than its Windows 7 SP1 according to the log. All those buffer underrun messages would have me looking at the audio driver as a potential culprit. Check out the manufacturer's website and see if there's an update.

Additionally, make sure you've installed all windows updates, including the "convenience rollup" update (unofficially known as SP2) from https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3125574

Thanks, will try that.

Strangely, Kodi is starting just fine when booting directly into kodi.exe without starting explorer.exe (I am using the Launcher4Kodi tool for that) (though the sound warnings are still there in the logs). Launching kodi.exe from Windows Explorer still leads to crash.
