Not sure if this will affect non-Aeon users, but I recently ran into slowdown issues in Linux (often severe) when switching between backdrops and watching video. Initially, I suspected this was because I'd just started toying with 1080p backdrops in BMP and PNG formats, some of which ran to >5mb.
The problem persisted, however, and I eventually traced it to trackerd, the indexing process. I guess having loads of big image files in a Home subfolder sent it into some kind of quasi, so I killed the beast and now everything's fine again. You can turn it off permanently through the Sessions dialog.
