You first have a understand that some DVD-Video movies (especially outside the USA) are interlaced and thus needs to be deinterlaced, so if you plan on making a list of different users video-settings you will need to know more about the actuall DVD-Video movie format that user has, and what type of display he got his Mac hooked up to.

Examples:

DVD-Video Movie:
NTSC Progressive DVD-Video movie
NTSC Interlaced DVD-Video movie
PAL Progressive DVD-Video movie
PAL Interlaced DVD-Video movie

Display:
Sony Bravia model xxx - 1080p
Sony Bravia model xxx - 1080i
Sony Bravia model xxx - 729p
Sony Bravia model xxx - 480p
Sony Bravia model xxx - 480i

Mac Hardware:
Mac mini with Mac OS X 10.5.0 running XBMC for Mac OS X version 0.1.5

Otherwise it can do more damage than good.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.

This is what has worked well for me as the best general setting for most material. Obviously this may not work for you depending on your equipment, source material, and personal preference. These setting may not work for you and I don't suggest you change any settings unless you know what your doing, have read all documentation, and understand how the setting may effect you.

Main Menu > Settings > Appearance > Screen
  • Flicker Filter - Off
  • Soften - Off
  • Vertical Sync - Always Enabled

Main Menu > Videos > OSD Video Settings (when playing video)
  • Interlaced Handling - None (will not work well for interlaced videos though)
  • Crop Black Bars - Off (turning on may help with auto select of wrong aspect ratio on some titles)
  • View Mode - Normal (to maximize display to match Widescreen or 4:3 material)
  • Zoom Amount - 1.0 (to avoid cropping of image)
  • Pixel Ratio - 1.0 (to avoid distortion of image)
  • Brightness - 50 (But depends On Source, Display, User Preference)
  • Contrast - 50 (But depends On Source, Display, User Preference)
  • Gamma - 20 (But depends On Source, Display, User Preference)
  • Flicker Filter - Off
  • Soften - Off
  • Film Grain Effect - Off
  • Non-Interleaved - Off
  • No Cache - Off
MAC Hardware / Software
  • Apple Mac Mini
  • 2 GHz Core 2 Duo
  • 4GB Ram (3.3GB usable)
  • OSX 10.5.2
  • XBMC For Mac OSX v0.1.5

Display Hardware
480P, 720P and 1080P Displays

Source Material
Primarily widescreen feature films not interlaced.
