Crash on playing video_ts
#1
Hi this is my first post. I just started using XBMC last week and I absolutely love it. It had been working great for a few days but now I am having two weird problems and they may be related somehow.

Problem 1: XBMC is crashing for me when I try to play a video_ts folder on a my local drive. If I select the folder and bring up the contextual menu and press play it crashes right away. If I navigate into the video_TS folder it pauses for a few seconds not letting me do anything and then crashes.

I posted the crash log here - http://pastebin.com/f46a3a940

Problem 2: If I try to play the exact same video_ts folder on a network share it actually starts to play it with very odd results. I will give an example. I played "Across the Universe" from a network share. It opened the DVD menu with all of the menu items in spanish and would not let me navigate the DVD menu. If I fast forwarded it brought me into the movie which played the spanish audio track with spanish subtitles. I am not able to do anything but play, fast forward, rewind, etc. This type of behavior is across the board with my video_TS folders on a network share. The menu of the DVD is inoperable. I tried playing the same video_TS folders in FrontRow just to make sure there wasn't a problem with them and they played flawlessly.

Any assistance anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info, I will gladly provide it. Thanks.

try using a different video_ts folder... It's very possible the one you have is corrupt. I watch lots of movies that I pulled from MTR and they play with out any problems.

I've found the best way to view these is to scan your library then open in library mode, reduces having to hunt down the vob file.

On the Linux side I see odd things playing IFO/VOB - which is a Video_ts folder format. The response is a bit different though, does it go full screen?

Some of my video_ts folders are MTR rips and some are not. Everything played fine for a few days and now I am having these issues. I can not currently play any of my video_ts folders without encountering the problems I mentioned. I will try your library suggestion. When it was working before, I would just navigate to the dvd directory root and bring up the contextual menu and press play. As I mentioned before, this will not work now.

Funny you ask. The ones I do get to play start off playing in a preview box. I have to press tab and then they go full screen. The ones that do play, do not play correctly and I mentioned in Problem 2.

If you are still having problems try throwing away ~/Library/Application Support/XBMC This will give you a fresh install. Immediately test your TS playback before tweaking any settings.

I mean to say if you are still having problems and it did work fine in the past.

Ok I tried your suggestion. Still no luck. I am still getting the same behavior I originally described.

Could it be a problem with the way I have my files organized? I have it setup like this: root/"movie name/VIDEO_TS. Inside of the VIDEO_TS directory is a straight rip of the movie. I don't think there is a problem with the VIDEO_TS being corrupt because they play flawlessly in FrontRow.

Thanks Again.

Not sure, Try creating Folder called movies, inside it have MTR direct RIP a movie to inside the folder. Try adding that as a source and see if it works...

Heh, I wondered what key would take it out of that preview box! Currently for me I get nothing even in the preview box, this has been going from working in preview to not working at all back and forth awhile now on Linux. Not tried this latest Linux SVN yet. The devs know about it though, fingers crossed.

Edit: Just used the TAB key to go full screen on the latest Linux SVN pull, W00t! Now if it would just do that by default we'd both be good to go.

I just watched (yet) another ripped DVD file with no problems. There has to be something wrong with your specific setup. I did the following to create these:

1. Made a folder called netflix on my external HDD
2. Ran MTR 3.0 (14m) on the DVD, full disk extraction saved to netflix folder

The Example I just played was Primer it's directory structure is as follows:

Code:
mac-mini: Netflix iordonez$ ls -Rl Primer/

Also try deleting the XBMC application along with the ~/Library/Application Support/XBMC folder. Create a single full disk rip from MTR inside an empty folder. If playback is unsuccessful post a link to your /var/tmp/xbmc.log file also.

The only time I had problems watching a DVD was when MTR crashed when trying to rip the disk (A history of Violence and Kinky Boots DVD's) and the rip was incomplete.

OK so I tried your suggestions iOrdonez. I deleted the XBMC application along with the ~/Library/Application Support/XBMC folder and reinstalled XBMC. I took several of the MTR rips (I'm using 3.0 build 14 btw) that have been behaving weirdly when on my windows XP network share and copied them to the movies folder in my user profile. All of them now play perfectly when they are local. When they are on the network, they display the problems I originally described in Problem 2.

There is one exception though to everything playing smoothly locally. I recently used MTR to do a Main Feature extraction of Michael Clayton. This is the only one that will not play from my local drive in XBMC. It plays perfectly in FrontRow. Does XBMC have an aversion to Main Feature extractions versus Full Disk Extractions?

Here is the crash error I received when trying to play Michael Clayton - http://pastebin.com/f62ca69a7

And as newbie as this sounds, I was not able to find the var/tmp/xbmc.log to post. Where is the var directory. Sorry...long time PC user Blush

There are problems running items over SMB due to VFS issues. Try and run all your movies locally until it is properly fixed. I would expect VFS changes to be ready in the next version or two, then completely stable a little further down the road (although Elan seems to be a coding mo'chine at this point).

I don't think main Feature extractions should be considered a valid Video TS folder since there has been data blindly removed from it. I try to stick to full disk extractions, especially when disk space is so cheap these days (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6822711058).

As for getting the xbmc.log file you can use the Go to folder command (shift+command+G) in finder. Type in /var/tmp/ when it asks for the path. OS X hides the Unix subsystem directories in finder so normal users such as yourself don't try and delete them to "free up space"... kinda like how windows hides pagefile.sys and tons of other files.

Should definitely not cause a crash, main feature extraction (which at least *should* be still a valid dvd structure one presumes) or not.

Do you have access to a win32 or linux box, or xbox to test it out so that we can ensure it's not an OSX specific issue?

If so, I suspect elupus will be interested in said video - see if you can reproduce the issue by chopping out a small chunk (say 20MB or so) out of the first .vob file, combine with the .ifo files, and see if it still crashes in the same way.

Cheers

The lines of the crash:

4 libdvdnav-osx.so 0x1873f57b set_VTS_PTT + 555
5 libdvdnav-osx.so 0x187403f5 process_command + 1557
6 libdvdnav-osx.so 0x187425ab vm_start + 171
7 libdvdnav-osx.so 0x18721280 dvdnav_get_next_cache_block + 736

It *could* be an OS X issue, but trying the video on Linux or Win32 definitely sounds like a good idea.

I also have an issue with video_ts on my macbook pro with 10.5.2 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I can add the sources just fine. As soon as I access the added source it shows the video_ts folder and then xbmc crashes for me. I am going to try a few things in this thread that have been posted to see if they fix anything.

Cheers.
