I just tried this build and it fixes the pal output issue I had. However the overscan settings don't stick: every time I reboot I have to calibrate the screen again. This isn't new, it also happens with kodi 18.4.
Edit just found out that it's been happening since 2017.
Oh, and on a raspberry pi zero w it cannot cope with the osd over playing video.
Edit: tried again with raspbian/kodi 18.4 and the osd is smooth even when playing videos. Pity it has other problems Sad
Up until now I just bothered with analog video output. Today, since pal output finally works, I also tried to obtain analog audio from the zero by using

dtoverlay=pwm,pin=18,func=2
audio_pwm_mode=2

(I didn't build an output filter, it's just for testing).
The audio works, even if in audio settings I leave the audio to hdmi (?), with the obvious pwm noise (since I don't have a filter in place).
If I set the output to analog, the pwm noise disappears (?) but the video is affected (it has vertical stripes)

Is that normal? (I refer to both things: analog output when set to hdmi, stripes on the video when set to analog).

Maybe keep an eye on this issue: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/issues/16683

No idea what "cannot cope" means. If playback starts to stutter, try uploading a debug log (wiki).
Texture Cache Maintenance Utility: Preload your texture cache for optimal UI performance. Remotely manage media libraries. Purge unused artwork to free up space. Find missing media. Configurable QA check to highlight metadata issues. Aid in diagnosis of library and cache related problems.

It takes ages to appear, it is slow to navigate (a delay of 2-3 seconds between a key press an the menu responding), and playback stutters. As soon as I can I'll upload a debug log.
Here is the debug log, the overlay with the debug log activated is enough to make the video stutter from the beginning, and I was overly optimistic: the reaction time between keypress and the menu is more like 6 seconds.
@bbcaddict As a test, try disabling pvr.hts and see if the OSD is more responsive - it looks like this add-on may be active during playback and there's only so much CPU available on a Pi Zero.

You can also test older test builds and try to determine when this issue first started with these Kodi 19 builds.

That's not really an option: the hts plugin is where I'm getting my video from (the purpose of this experiment is to get satellite tv from a tvheadend server to an old tv in the kitchen). For the same reason I cannot try an older build since pal output only started working recently Undecided.
Edit and when I say that 18.4 is butter smooth, that's with the hts plugin too.
Edit2 anyways, I tried playing a video from an nfs mounted directory and it does exactly the same.
Edit3 actually not quite that bad, but then I was playing a lower bitrate video.
If composite/PAL worked with 9.1.501 (but not 9.1.502) then you might find that a Kodi 19 test build from 2-3 months ago is working on your Pi Zero and could allow you to bisect this issue (assuming it also started more than 2-3 months ago). Alternatively copying the latest firmware (start.elf, fixup.dat, bootcode.bin) over an older build might work, but is more effort.

Unfortunately unless anyone else can offer a useful insight/suggestion it may be difficult to pin down the change that is causing this issue.

Actually I don't know when the firmware stopped working with pal, I just tried libreelec because raspbian buster didn't work Angel
If I put an older tgz in the .update directory will it downgrade? I'm asking because configuring the wifi is a chore with the keyboard (my password is 64 random characters) and I never managed to configure connman by editing its files (which I could do by moving the sd card to my pc).

I think someone else said composite stopped working with 9.1.502.

Yes if you copy an older tar into the update folder and reboot it will downgrade and retain existing WiFi settings.

I just downgraded to 9.1.501 and it does not work. Next stop: 9.0.2.
Edit 9.0.2 mostly works but, like more recent releases, the screen calibration isn't stored and it cannot zap between channels Confused
