Unable to start XBMC (Atlantis) in Hardy -> core dump ?
#1
Hi everyone,

First I'd like to say THANK YOU to all the XBMC team. I've been using this wonderful software on my Xbox for many years. XBMC is by far the best Media Center around. And now I'm very happy to see a port on Linux.

Unfortunately, I've been trying to make this to work on my machine with no luck. I tried different install method (PPA, manual build, ./build.sh). I even did a fresh install of my OS on another partition with always the same result.

I've been looking around this forum. Although I did find some useful information here, it never worked out for me. Now I'm kindly asking for any help since I would LOVE Xbmc to run on my Ubuntu.

Problem: I can see the splash screen for a second, then it close. Same thing if I open with the icon in the menu or if I type xbmc in a terminal. If I start from terminal, I receive a "Abandon (core dump)... which is a Seg Fault I guess... My Ubuntu is in french.

Linux Distribution: Ubuntu 8.04 (kernel 2.6.24-19-generic) up to date as of 2008-08-20

Architecture: i686 (from uname -m)

Install Method: PPA

SVN Revision: xbmc 8.10a3-hardy2

Debug Log: http://pastebin.com/m2e48e528

Backtrace:
http://pastebin.com/f67afcf6b

Specs: Asus a7n8x-e deluxe, AMD Athlon XP 2500+, 1.5 GB RAM, GeForce AGP 7600 GS 512MB, M-Audio Audiophile 2496

Let me know if more information is needed.

Thanks in advance for all your help!
Guillaume

Can you get a real backtrace as per http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=34655 and paste it here. The libc backtraces are sparse at best.

Pretty weird.

Looks like it is core dumping in gethostbyname when looking up xoap.weather.com.

What is in your /etc/nsswitch.conf ?

If you have WINS in there, please try to remove and test again.

Thanks.

Woooow thank you sooo much... it worked!!!

I edited my /etc/nsswitch.conf file to remove "wins" from the hosts line...
I added this because I have a Synology (Ds-106j), and I followed that guide to have permanent cifs mount... I use a static ip for my Syno instead, so no need for that "wins" anymore...

Well.... I tried sooo many things without any luck.... I should have asked for help earlier :p

Now off to trying it out on Ubuntu!!! can't wait to watch HD (if my computer allows it....)

Again, thank you !!

De rien Smile

Anyhow, it seems to be a bug in some ubuntu libs.

Enjoy!
