[Apple TV] Install new skins
#1
I feel really bad for asking this, as I'm sure it's been answered, but I'm not sure how I would add a new skin to my Apple TV. I imagine it has something to do w/ SSH (which I know next to nothing about).

If someone could help me out or at least push me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Install new skin

1) sftp (ssh file transfer protocol) into apple tv.
server/host=ip port=22
user=frontrow password=frontrow

apps
windows-filezilla
OSX - cyberduck

2) browse to "/Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/Resources/XBMC/skin"

you may need to browse back a few times to get into the root dir

3) just drop them there and restart XBMC if it was running

4) in XBMC goto system->settings->appearance to change skins

Change RSS feeds

"RssFeeds.xml" is located at "/Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/Resources/XBMC/userdata"
Copy to your computer. Edit it and save to back to the apple tv. (make sure to override the old file)

I'm not home yet, but I'll try this as soon as I get out of work.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it!

Could the users and/or Mods please post links to skins that actually work nicely on ATV2.2?

Since I've seen some skins labeled with "works good with...", "not to recommend for..." etc.

I like Skins like Vinci, Aeon, etc. (from the screenshots), but do they work without crashing?

cheers

Just try them. None of the skins will "crash" XBMC. Even a resource hog of a skin like mediastream runs on the appletv. Some of them just run a little better. Since mediastream has so much eyecandy in it, it tends to me a little jumpy in some views. Just take one you like and load it on. If it doesn't run smooth enough for you move on to the next skin.

tsf42m suggested filezilla for windows. I would like to add another option. Winscp is another good program. There isn't a whole lot going on in the interface and is just plain easy. Just thought I would toss that out there.

Be careful of drive space copying too many skins over. At least with my set up (I don't use atvflash), the / partition is small.

Instead I store skins on /Users/frontrow/.....

Then create a softlink @ /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/Resources/XBMC/skin to point there.

I've figured out how to install skins. It's much easier if you download Cyberduck (http://www.cyberduck.ch) then follow Tsf42m's directions.

I still have two questions though. How do you figure out the remaining size of the partition? And, how do you create a soft link?

Thanks

Hi everyone

I followed different instructions read here, but still can´t get the skin to appear in my appletv.

The thing is that when entering Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/Resources/XBMC there is not a skin folder in there

I have tried creating a "skin" folder and placing the skin folder (Aeon) in it and it didn´t work either, nor placing the Aeon skin folder directly in ...Resources/XBMC

I´m working with Cyberduck

Any idea what else could I try??

Thank you very much

if your'e running the newest svn's, basically anything past roughly 28300 and above, then the old way of applying skins doesn't work anymore... you need to use the add-on manager and make sure the skin is compatible.

Thanks Raider

This add-on manager is in XBMC?

yes, it's one of the new features being rolled into the 10.04 release of xbmc...

I found the add-on manager, but how can I make the skin appear in the list (i see there are 3 skins there, but not the one I want to install)?

Thanks
