Now Im trying to get xbmc to run on my PoS Dell. It has Ubuntu 8.10 and XBMC build 16188. when I play video I get a white screen. I can still hear audio. when I pull up the video menu I get video behind the menu. any ideas on what could be f'ed up?

How about some details on the hardware? Say the video chipset etc. for starters?

3.0ghz P4, 1Gb Ram, Radeon 7200 graphics. I know the gpu doesn't support a high enough openGL version but it works fine with windows XP XBMC on the same machine.
