XBMC failing to run at all here. Error message indicated an issue with the strings.xml file in the language section for English. Looking at it the very first character is a lowercase u followed by < as an opening for an XML tag. No other language files had this. Removing it from my source and rerunning make install fixed the issue for me. Might help others until the source on SVN is fixed...
