Cache settings for a FTP source...
#1
Hey folks!

First time caller, long time listener... Big Grin

I have a webserver with video content (.mkv) and i want to watch the video content using XBMC. As far as i know using the FTP protocol is the only way to transfer files across the internet when using XBMC. SMB, UPNP, XBMSP only work on LAN if i'm correct and im pretty sure i can't use iTunes music share or TuxBox. Smile
So i'm using FTP and it works pretty good. But the video content uses a variable bitrate and some high bitrate parts need to be buffered by the cache since the internet connection cant keep up with those parts.
But the cache settings dont seem to work for the FTP source. There is no difference between setting the cache to off or 16MB, XBMC will still buffer for about 4MB i think (looking at DU Meter) and then play and download at whatever speed it needs.
Now i found this in the wiki (http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=System_Settings#Cache) about the 'internet' cache setting:
Quote:Internet applies to http, https, shout, mms, http, rtsp, rtp, udp, lastfm
Now there is no FTP in that list, but http is in there twice! Shocked
So is the 2nd HTTP a mistake and is there really is no cache adjustment for a FTP source. Or should the 2nd HTTP be FTP and should i be able to increase the cache size for a FTP source. (if so HOW! Huh)

Thanks! Big Grin

BTW, there is no way to add a HTTP/web folder containing media is there?

XBMSP is not only for LAN!
I use it because it's much better than FTP for media streaming.
Look for ccxStream program...

Thanks for the reply! Smile

I've installed ccxGUI 1.41 and it does work Smile However when i use FTP the download speed peaks at 880kb/s (my max speed) and when i use XBMSP the max speed is about 590kb/s. Now that wouldn't be a problem if i could increase the cachesize, but that still doesn't work. I've set all the cache sizes to their max (which is 16MB) but still only 4MB is cached. Sad
Does XBMC apply the caching settings to .mkv files? Or do i have to add the .mkv extention somewhere so it'll know it's needs to apply the video cache settings?

EDIT: I just tested with an .avi file and it does the exact same thing. Cache about 4MB of data. And even when i turn all caching off it keeps caching 4MB of data... Sad
