I have looked all over and I'm not sure of the answer to this question. Does the P5Q-EM intel chipset hdmi audio work in Ubuntu? If so, does it work right out the box or is there something special that needs to be done? I'll be using XBMC.

Yep, audio over hdmi works on the PQ5-EM.
When i bought the mobo 3 1/2 months ago, i installed Ubuntu Intripid (8.10) and had lots of problems getting several things to work.
Since then, i've upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) and i guess everything should be working out of the box now.
So if you're planning on installing Ubuntu, get the latest Jaunty beta.
