Looked at the XBMC Online Manual and in it, under the XBMC Settings and under Video Settings, it lists 2 entries in the setup under "Player":

Use External DVD Player
Allows you to select an external player to play DVD video, as opposed to using the integrated DVDPlayer
External DVD Player
With the above option enabled, prompts you to browse for the external DVD player to use.

I have downloaded the latest version of XBMC for Windows and the Aeon "Stark" skin, and under the video settings, these 2 entries are nowhere to be found. Am I missing something here?? Was this feature removed the latest version?

So is there anything available for Windows users to get an external player to work, other than messing with code, etc within XBMC?

This is the only obstacle Im trying to jump right now. I have been using VMC with Open Media Library (OML). Within OML it gives you a clear cut set up menu to select your external player, the path and also your mounting choice (Daemon Tools or Virtual Clone Drive).
