Is my TV incompatible with XBMC? No display when fullscreen at 1080i
#1
I have a 1080i HDTV (Hitachi 57F59A). When I start XBMC fullscreen, the TV mode switches like it's just lost input. I had to run XBMC windowed (at 1280x720) to get in and change settings and every option in the screen settings that took it fullscreen, resulted in no input from the TV. The fullscreen options were: Auto, 1920x1080@30Hz, [email protected], and 1080i 16:9.

Here's the debug log, but I doubt it's much help because XBMC still appeared to be working normally when I would change to a fullscreen resolution, I just couldn't see anything on my TV to confirm settings so it would time out and revert back to 720p.

I'm using a version of XBMC I downloaded from the pinned thread just this morning (SVN 19855) but it was also doing it on a version from a few weeks back (SVN 19301).

I can however run XBMC fullscreen at 720p. To do that, I just start it windowed and it comes up 720p, I hit \ in XBMC and my TV detects a change to 720p input and everything seems to be working... just no luck at 1080i.

The Windows Vista (SP1, 32bit) desktop runs on the TV at 1920x1080@30Hz and it works great... along with other apps besides XBMC that I use to play video (Vista Media Center, MPC-HC). CPU is an E8400, 4GB of RAM, Nvidia 9500GT video card with v182.50 drivers.

I also have the option in the windows control panel to switch the desktop resolution to 1920x1080@29Hz. That worked fine in windows, but XBMC had the same issue fullscreen (regardless of setting it to 1920x1080@29 or 30hz).

Well, after searching around for a bit I found a couple other threads here in the windows forum about 1080i not working, no replies. One said it stopped working suddenly for them so I went back to an early version (8.10) but that made no difference. Maybe it's just an XBMC issue?

Does anyone have XBMC for Windows working at 1080i?

Yes, for me XBMC runs on the TV at 1080p (the TV shows as 1080p 24Hz) but XBMC shows 1080i. It also works at 1080p 60Hz.

What I mean is there anyone with an actual 1080i TV who is using XBMC fullscreen at 1920x1080?

I also have a Samsung 1080p TV and that one works fine if I set XBMC to 1080i, 1920x1080@30, 1920x1080@60 or any 1920x1080 setting. It's only my Hitachi that craps out when it gets a fullscreen 1920x1080 from XBMC.

Well, I've still had no luck getting XBMC to work on the TV at 1920x1080 but I did find that 1680x1050@30Hz works in fullscreen. So, for now, I've just set the resolution to that and then adjusted the pixel ratio in the video calibration to fix aspect ratio back to 16:9.

It's not the best solution and I'm not getting full resolution, but I probably wouldn't notice the difference anyways.

ive mentioned this several times - even reported it in trac (http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/5805). Still not working in current svn's. See the posts below for more info

Well, it's good to know I'm not the only one with this problem. It looks like that trac ticket has been closed though. I guess I could open a new one but my debug log shows nothing out of the ordinary, it's just whatever resolution/refresh rates/timings/whatever that XBMC is sending results in my TV seeing no signal. I doubt there would be any real interest in solving this anyways since those of us with 1080i TV's are probably a very small minority... heck, even I have plans to dump this old CRT one day soon and replace it with a LCD.

Alright, I've been a long time user of XBMC, but I just created an account since I found a workaround while working this problem out on my HTPC (I'm grabbing a vga->hdmi cable tomorrow however, which is what I'd recommend most people do if it's only through component).

In any case, here are the steps:
Step 1: Hook up secondary monitor, and set it as the primary monitor (this can be done through a "pc" input in the lcd, or another input entirely).
Step 2: Use XBMCLaunch (http://www.rodhette.org/xbmcLaunch.exe) to open xbmc on your 1920x1080 screen in 1920x1080.

[OPTIONAL TO GET EVERYTHING WORKING AS IT SHOULD BE WORKING]
Step 3: If you wish you can then set the res to 1080i in xbmc to make xbmc fullscreen as it should have originally been.
Step 4: Set your primary monitor back to the 1920x1080i screen (you may need to go to your secondary monitor to open the display dialogue).

You will now be able to use your main screen properly, even with full alt-tab support (and you should be able to unplug your "secondary" monitor)

I hope this helps at least one person, and maybe when I'm more sober I'll try and clean my post up a bit.

Have a good night,
Synergy
