sound issues on intrepid + babylon

though i think this is a pre-xbmc issue.

running shuttle sg33 g5m, with audio going through s/pdif out -> header on nvidia 9400 board, muxed into the HDMI (so s/pdif passthrough to the tv)

fresh install of everything, but installed 8.10 intrepid to match my other box.

other box is identical (same shuttle, same install, older version of xbmc), except using the pcm direct to a receiver.

no sound in shell. speaker-test doesn't work, aplay doesn't work, mplayer doesn't work, xbmc doesn't work. none report errors, but no sound is produced.

starting up gdm, speaker-test starts working. aplay still doesn't, xbmc still doesn't, mplayer still doesn't.

i had an issue before of sound working with gdm, but not without, that was solved by adding my user to the "audio" group. same done here, no effect.

idears?

Please resolve problems with your distro at their forums. XBMC is enough to support on its own, thanks.

Check out my post here:

It might be helpful, kinda sounds like what I encountered, but I don't use gnome. The biggest thing was updating alsa to the latest using the script.
