Apple Remote and Apple Wireless Keyboard with non-Mac?
#1
I'm really impressed by the Apple design and was thinking if it would be possible to get their Apple Remote and Apple Wireless Keyboard to work together with XBMC (Linux or Live) on a normal Intel PC? Anyone tried it or do I need to get myself a MAC?

That's what I've been trying to Google for but was wondering if anyone really got it to work. Apple Remote is IR so I guess I need an IR receiver (maybe any receiver that you get with a MCE remote works?) and Apple Wireless Keyboard is bluetooth so I guess I need to get a bluetooth receiver aswell that is supported on Linux.

I'm using Apple Wireless Keyboard with Ubuntu 9.04 and a kensington bluetooth dongle (this one: http://us.kensington.com/html/14409.html) and so far I have no problems.

The multimedia keys are working (haven't really tested this part though) and the F1-F12 are working as expected as long as you hit the Fn key at the same time... (and of course everything else aswell)

If you want to re-map keys etc, you need to check the commands xev and xmodmap , e.g. "xmodmap -pke" gives all current keybindings and xev displays key-events for a specific key-press.

I bought the Apple Wireless Keyboard to see if it can be used with a future HTPC, so I'm not using it with XBMC yet only Ubuntu 9.04.

So I guess as long as it works with Ubuntu it will work with XBMC?

Anyone with an Apple Remote?

if it is IR based.. LIRC should make it work

though a ps3 remote would be better imo as it would be bluetooth as well.

I got a MacMini with Ubuntu 9.4 installed. The only thing I needed was lirc and I had to change the lirc config file. That was ist.
But keep in mind: You only have six (yes 6) buttons. I'm missing my original XBox-Remote already.

Greetings

What do you miss the most? Since I have a XBOX remote to my XBMC on my XBOX and I don't feel that I use much more than a few buttons. Up/down/left/right, info (for IMDB info) and menu. Maybe I haven't realized what I wil miss?

right you are ;-) Those are missing as well.

At the moment I am using the Mac Bluetooth keyboard for those buttons that are missing. I think on the longrun I will go for a bluetooth remote...
