in mplayer 1pre5>> ftp support...
can you added in xbmc?
add ftp extension in:
mplayer.cpp
musicinfotagloader...
playlistpls.cpp
util.cpp
it play fine... vp6 plays slow in ftp

should be added as a virtual filesystem in xbmc, there is a patch about it on sf. if the author is still around we might implement it. it would allow browsing / playback from ftp.
