XBMC 9.04 'Babylon' released, ready for download

XBMC Media Center 9.04 (codename: Babylon) final is now released. Versions for Apple TV, Mac OS X (Tiger, Leopard. Intel-x86, PowerPC), Windows (XP, Vista), Linux (Ubuntu PPA), Xbox, and a bootable Live CD/USB distribution (XBMC Live) of this free cross-platform media center software are available and are ready for download, (as usual the full source code is also available in our SVN repository under the GPL open source license).

Among the many new features in XBMC 9.04 is PPC (PowerPC) support for Mac OS X, VDPAU (NVIDIA GPU Hardware Accelerated Video Decoding for Linux), updated Codecs, new Karaoke features, more Media Info Scrapers, improved FanArt support, and of course enhancements to the XBMC Skinning Framework making it even more flexible and powerful. For the full list of what is new in this version of XBMC please see the 9.04 milestone on trac.

Six months after the release of 'Atlantis' (XBMC 8.10), we have reached the end of an almost two month long bug bash since the feature freeze for XBMC 9.04, and have closed over 700 tickets on trac for this release. While there are still a few known issues and some small bugs outstanding, we feel that 'Babylon' is now reasonably stable, and thus it is time to move on and get cracking on new features and functions for the next version of XBMC. We have branched for release, and will maintain this branch with critical bug fixes while we move on and begin working on new features in the mainline SVN.

The Babylon codename has more than one meaning to us, fitting in with our tradition of picking codenames based on famous locations in popular TV-series or Movies. For one, it is a homage to the space station in the cult classic science fiction television series 'Babylon 5', but this codename also references the ancient city of Babylon. History tells that the city of Babylon started out as a small town that later flourished, attaining prominence and political repute with the rise of the first Babylonian dynasty. According to the biblical account, Babylon was a city that united humanity, all speaking a single language and migrating from the east; it was the home city of the great king Nimrod, and the first city to be built after the Great Flood.

Now go grab XBMC 'Babylon' and let us know how it goes!

Team-XBMC would like to especially thank everyone who submitted patches and helped hunt bugs.

Discuss here.

Yours sincerely / Team-XBMC

Any reason your going with 9.0? If this is your first go at XBMC I would strongly suggest using Dharma 10.0.
