I can't get the SVN version to run, i only get the old version from the Ubuntu PPA. The wierd thing is i removed the package with apt-get remove.

Maybe you should write two guides one for the guys that run PPA and one for SVN?
Hardware: ASUS P5N7A-VM with 2GB RAM and Intel Celeron 430 1,8GHz @ 3,06GHz

^^ Yeah, I'm in a similar situation (I'm a linux noob). Been running live for a while, but wanted a desktop. I installed Ubuntu desktop, xbmc etc., then executed this command to make xbmc auto-start:
sudo apt-get install xbmc-live python-apt

However, I'd like to be able to drop back to the Ubuntu desktop from time to time, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any tips?

Go to wiki, follow official guide. Install xbmc & xbmc-standaline. Use the xbmc GDM session and autostart into that.

With this setting - how do you launch another application like firefox with the launcher plugin!?

Cheers,

I have installed the normal Ubuntu desktop, and have followed the guide, but are there a way to use xbmc-live and be able to use gnome interface?

You can still start gnome manually or in the background. At least if you follow the guide and install minimal ubuntu and later add gnome. If it does not work if you install the desktop cd it could be that the order of things matter.

When using the guide the section Updating alsa

Issuing the command

# wget http://xbmc.org/wp-content/uploads/alsaup.sh

I get back

You can find the script here... http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p...ost6589810

Just download it, unpack it to your home directory, rename to alsaup.sh, and then you're set...

I've read through the thread, but can't find an appropriate solution for shutdown/sleep etc. (xbmc restarting problem...).

Did I miss something? Some posts mention xbmc --> xbmc.bin, but I can't even find the file /usr/bin/runXBMC.sh to edit.

What is the solution?

Probably motherboard dependent. I have no problem with shutdown/sleep when setup according to this guide.

Might be, bur I doubt that... Have worked for me on previous installations.

Seems to be a common problem if you read the thread... Something in the scripting or something.

You should probably explain your problem more clearly. What is not working? On my Asrock ION 330 all PM functionality I am aware if is working without any tweaking.

With Karmic resume from suspend seem to be an issue.

I am also having (probably) the same problem with suspend / shutdown.

The problem is they don't work.. When you try to shutdown it exists XBMC and reloads it again. When you try to sleep, it gives an error message:

"Is another session active, perhaps over ssh?"

This only happens when xbmc boots directly, if I exit xbmc and then I restart an x session (running xinit) under the same xbmc user, and then try to suspend, it works.
