Is there a way I can adjust the audio settings (in XBMC) so that the volume f the dialog in a movie is higher.
For example, I am watching The Dark Knight and the special effects and background music often drown out the dialog.
I have this problem on an old Sony Trinatron and Yamaha receiver (stereo not surround) with XBMC running on an XBOX.

The receiver has dolby and other settings like movie, concert, and a few others....but none seem to make a difference.

Any suggestions, besides upgrading to surround?

You either need to enable "downmix multichannel audio to stereo" or use the advanced setting for downmix amplification (see wiki).
