[ATV] Stuttering during playback
#1
Hi,

On some of my movies I experience stuttering -- roughly two "stutters" per second. It is most apparent on horizontal panning (and no, it has nothing to do with vsync which works fine), and I have a feeling that it may be limited to playing of NTSC movies on my PAL telly... but I am not sure.

I have tried all possible settings of the A/V sync option but to no avail. Running SVN21125 on my Apple TV.

Log file (launching XBMC and starting the movie): http://pastebin.com/m2ebfb793

For starters, please disable the smoothvideo feature by de-selecting 'Sync playback to display'. That will allow us to focus on just the playback of the video. The video sync method is forced to skip/duplicate for AC3 passthrough. Post another log once you have the setting turned off.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.

Well, if PAL is the only resolution you can use with a refreshrate of 50 hertz, you're pretty much stuck with setting A/V Sync method to Resample and disabling passthrough, that will cause 23.976 and 24 fps material to be sped up to 25 fps.

That also requires "sync playback to display" to be turned on.

OK,

I did as suggested and here is the log: http://pastebin.com/m3050498

Once the movie starts it does not write anything to the log -- meaning "everything is fine"?

I did the same with another movie that also stutters, and it also didn't write anything in the log once it had started playing. The mediainfo for that movie is here: http://pastebin.com/m4144d10d

Thanks for helping,

I am going to bed and will look at the Wikipedia article tomorrow. However, I tried what bobo1on1 suggested and it worked -- smooth video... but alas, no sound. I am using digital out on the ATV, but maybe analog will work (but no surround then).

My TV actually takes both PAL and NTSC signals, but I am not sure if the ATV is apple to switch mode on the fly. I tried to set the resolution in XBMC to '720x576' instead of '720x576 @ 50.00Hz', but it still stuttered when using passthrough. I also tried 'auto'. Maybe XBMC is unable to overwrite the setting in the ATV's native user interface.
