Interesting Download Statistics - Taken from sshcs.com/xbmc/

I know what they say about statistics. There are only 3 types of lies. Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics. But I went through my download stats and found some pretty distinct trends. I posted this on my website but throught maybe the devs would be interested in some raw demographics.

Since April 21 2009

Raw Download Stats Last 51 days

OS X 1927 Times or 37.79 Times Per Day
Linux 629 Times or 12.34 Times Per Day
Win32 1995 Times or 39.12 Time Per Day
XBOX 3329 Times or 65.27 Times Per Day

Total Downloads 7880 Eek
Total Downloads 154.51 times per day

On raw data it apears that OS X, Linux and Win32 are downloaded FAR few times and they are, but
one must take into account that all 3 are available many other places.
OS X and Win32 are popular downloads on at least a half a dozen other sites and Win32 has a few great autoupdater scripts out there.
Linux people tend to compile their own therefore do not need to download a prebuild package.
XBOX isn't really available anywhere except T3CH and She only updates like once every other week or so.

Makes it kind of hard to get a true demographics breakdown, but the raw numbers are interesting anyway in that
they seem to be the direct opposite of the efforts being bestowed on XBMC, Where Linux gets the most work done to it
and XBOX the least.

Just thought it was interesting.

the numbers are highly dependent on the platforms with proper package management. as expected linux users mostly grab through apt.

an interesting point is the windows and osx numbers, they are quite close which surprises me. i'd reckon it would be more windows dominated.

the numbers also indicate that alot of users use multiple platforms and/or simply suck hard at not deleting the files they download Wink

I haven't yet did a few left joins to see how many distinct IPs cover all 4 platforms, but when I do I'll be able to see just how many people grab say win32 and OSX and or XBOX all at once.

I may eventually open up a build for apt, but not that into it yet Smile

now I am curious, time to do a full pull from the db.

damn and i wanted sleep.

After Combining the data from all 4 trunks. I get this

Actual Downloads 52 Days

7976 Downloads All Branches = 153.38 Downloads a day

3498 Distinct IP Addresses All Branches = 2.280 Downloads Per IP

Average 38 Megs per Download = 5814 Megs Per Day
Total 302,338 Megs Downloaded 52 days YIKES

Sourceforge shows a slightly different picture if you look at the Atlantis download statistic (Babylon had a few repacks which falsified the comparison)

Where do you see that? I did see the site usage graph though and it mirrors mine closely.
Sourceforge's

mine

Except:
A. Mine is higher Cool
B: Mine doesn't show bandwidth usage.

Though it just made me go to my host's stats viewer and I almost had a heart attack.

I have NO idea where those numbers are coming from, but now it is time to tack on some code in the root site to see just WTF is saying over 120,000 requests in May

In my opinion, these numbers are not reprensentative of the reality.

I'm for instance pretty sure that most linux users do install their XBMC using debian packages. Most XBOX users would use "3rd party" binaries.

Also, while I'm using the linux version, I have downloaded BOX for windows at least 3 times, installing it on various computers in order to test a few features locally.

I don't really know how realistics number could be found out... Smile

We should change each platform's UserAgent in CURL, and check the weblogs on the RSS feed in order to guage relative usage Tongue
