Adding Movie Trailers to themoviedb.org so that they can be scraped with TMDB in XBMC
#1
Information
If you are using Ember or anything else to get trailers from TMDB can we please all start adding trailers to it from youtube. Its a community site and at the moment theres a staggering amount of movies without trailers linked to them.

It honestly takes about a minute to find a trailer on youtube, preview it for quality, find the coresponding tmdb page and add it, you dont need to be a member of tmdb or anything to add trailers, its really simple!

This will help everyone that uses the site, emm, mips (when it has the function) and xbmc in general (who knows, they may add native trailer options themselves when tmdb has a decent enough collection of them)

Also please add trailers of good quality and official ones.

Most of the popular movies do have trailers now.

Maybe you can let us all know what type of links are supported by themoviedb.org for movie trailers? Wink

Like, is only YouTube links supported(?) or does it also support links to alternative sources such as:
http://www.hd-trailers.net
http://www.traileraddict.com/
http://www.apple.com/trailers/
http://movies.yahoo.com/trailers/
http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Trailers/
http://www.break.com/movie-trailers/movie-trailers.html
http://se.filmtrailer.com/ (Swedish and English Movie Trailers)
http://www.comingsoon.net/trailers/
http://www.boomtrailers.com/
http://www.movie-list.com/
http://www.themoviebox.net/trailers/
http://www.hollywood.com/trailers/
http://www.mtv.com/movies/trailer_park/
http://www.english-trailers.com/
http://www.trailerspy.com/

...and/or any other similar sites as long as one post the correct link?

Huh

PS! Off-topic; some of these also have TV Show trailers, so would be cool if TheTVDB supported this too:

There is a ticket open for additional trailer sites but there is no guarantee with these sites that the trailer will stay up or have the same URL over a period of time.

Youtube clips never change, that's why they are standard. Now with HD capabilities I don't really see any reason to use other sites.

Well, the clips sometimes are pulled for copyright issues, or the user may choose to delete it, so its not entirely true..

The best would be if we could uploade the trailers, that way they would be always available, but I guess the storage and bandwith would limit that option. (Somebody sitting on a gigabyte line and a few terrabytes of storage that could donate perhaps Big Grin )

Have to wait for zagtome to reply about the ability to add trailers from sites other than youtube to tmdb. At the moment you cant. But if the videos hosted on other sites were flv's or mp4s then there is hope. Youtube has a large amount of trailers and most are in good quality.
It would be fantastic if tmdb could pull the trailer off youtube and host it itself instead of linking it but they prolly go through enough bandwidth a month with out hosting 10mb trailers for each and every movie they have! In the meantime, if a trailer is broken it only takes one person, 2 minutes to find a new link and add it to tmdb.

Theres a couple of other sites that can be used for getting trailers but they arnt that great. The main thing with other sites is they are not easily searchable for EMM, MIP or even xbmc. They have to be searchable via imdb number for a 100% guarantee of getting the right trailer.

We should all be supporting tmdb anyway, its an awesome site, so could we all help out and make it the place for trailers! I have personally added 30+ trailers, and will add more over the weekend.

No, but if a site like TheTVDB.com stored link to them then I am sure it would be added to XBMC Nod

...so you really need to lobby this idea to the admins of TheTVDB.com so they add it to their site and API for scraping!

Above suggestion to add more links initiated from EMM capability to scrape from tmdb. If you use EMM, it will scrape the trailer from youtube. There is still the risk that some yotube links become invalid, but I dont think that storing on tmdb is necessary the necessary solution. It might be sufficient for tmdb to check link validity and remove invalid links.

Also, I dont think reference to other trailer sites are necessary, but youtube trailer links would be sufficient given breadth and depth of youtube (and also keeping scraping through EMM easy).

Another thing is much more important and requires help from all of us. We all need to spend time adding youtube links to tmdb and make sure not to add crap, but only proper and official trailers. I am planning to do so next week for 200 movies or so, but the more of us become active, the better!!!

Is there a benefit to TMDB over IMDB? There are tons of scrapers and I just use IMDB b/c it's the only one I've heard of before. The same goes for TV shows and music, is one better than the other?

For me, TMDB has very good movie art etc, but the search engine is not as good as IMDB, so sometimes it scrapes the wrong information.

FYI; movie trailer scraping from dtrailer.com to TheMovieDB.org scraper has now been added to the SVN thanks to stacked!

scraper is awesome, thanks guys
I'm loving the trailer links being added automatically, but. . .

is there a way to update the existing library so the scraper only "adds" the trailers??

I know I can rescrape my entire library, but I changed so many fanart pics and thumbs, it would be a pain to do all that over

We probably should find another source for trailers. dtrailer.com is great but it isn't so reliable. Their trailers are bad quality and the stream speeds for the trailers are slow (15-30KB/s). The only thing they're good for is that they have a huge database of trailers for old and new movies. Does anyone know of a better alternative?
