Hi. (im new to xbmc and linux)
Searched on forums all day to maybe find a answer but no luck.

I have LANPARTY JR GF9400-T2RS motherboard with hdmi output.
using Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with nVidia 190.18.03 driver, and ALSA 1.0.19 driver.

when i go to System > Preference > Sound i set all the playbacks to HD NVidia HDMI (alsa)
then i go to Volume control preference, mark IEC958 2
and i get sound in the Movie Player, but no were else.. not when i startup Ubuntu and not in xbmc.

hope anyone can help me.

Found the solution for sound in XBMC (not gotten it in Ubuntu tho) but this is an htpc so no worries.

and remember step 33

i works fine on movies and music now. (theres no sound when navigating tho)
