switching over from windows

I was wondering what the main differences where from the windows build and the linux build of xbmc?

I really like linux as I have installed on my laptop and it runs great (no xbmc on it though) you can see my below specs. I would like to run 720p movies as it stutters on the windows build unless I use the external player mod.

does linux run faster and would it run better on my pc?

Any improvements would likely range from placebo to marginal. I'll never stop someone from ditching windows though Smile

i love this althekiller; you're a wizard with the codes & the wordsBig Grin

in windows you have XBMC running as an application on your desktop
on xbmc-live you have a specialised (slim-ubuntu) designed for HTPCs, running only xbmc.
( + w/ tux under the hood anything can happen Wink)

Either way you will have a bad taste in your mouth..
Windows: Tastes like Bill G's most netherst of regions.
Linux: Blood from the aneurysm.

But seriously.. make the switch.. I recently ditched windows on my HTPC and I'm very happy with Linux. Even with the eye-twich that I've developed... Wink

I'd look into hardware support on that video card though... Are you getting it with Windows? I don't know about with Linux.. might not.

yes it working on windows however cannot play hd content (720/180) as I have to use the external player mod to get VLC or MPC to play it smoothly.

that is what I am wondering if my current pc would be suitable. I am thinking of getting an acer revo instead as my real choice however need the wifey ok.....they are nicely priced and have them in stock in canada (shipping it to the US) Wink

Try the Linux Live CD version of XBMC. That will give you some idea as to performance if the distro will recognize the hardware. These days you ought to be able to put together a VERY capable box pretty cheap though!
Openelec Gotham, MCE remote(s), Intel i3 NUC, DVDs fed from unRAID cataloged by DVD Profiler. HD-DVD encoded with Handbrake to x.264. Yamaha receiver(s)

(aside from my HD rig in the living room)
i have a 2nd box in the bedroom with the intel 915
the minimum is intel 950, but im running live fine @ 800x600
im blind without the glasses anyway NerdLaugh

live is really your best bet... download / burn / boot. just keep in mind it has to read everything from the disk, so it will take a little longer to start VS an HD or USD install.

xbmc-live is a no risk, free trail offer.
dont like it... reboot. all is back to normal.
stop talking about it and giv'r Cool
