I'd like to see if I can help with an Aeon font replacement project so that the illegally-distributed proprietary fonts can be replaced with comparable free ones. Could someone "in the know" describe what factors are necessary to consider when replacing fonts (spacing, weight, etc.)?

I'm not so sure that the current font is being "illegally distributed".
It my just be that its current license doesn't allow it to be released as part of a package.

At the very least, the Scout font family is a copyrighted commercial font.

Why should this have anything to do with AEON? You'd be doing a huge service to the whole xbmc skinning community by providing a source of open fonts.

My aim was to try to locate already available free or non-commercial fonts that are consistent with the look and feel of Aeon. This could of course be done for other skins, but you have to start somewhere. I wasn't going to create new fonts, just scour the web looking for already-available ones that could be (for example) included in the distribution on github.

I've always loved the Liberation font and think it would look great in Aeon. Best part about it, it's open-source and free to distribute under the GPL license.

I've always thought it was crazy having to install fonts separately.
Free font replacements would be a massive improvement

I certainly hope this will lead to Aeon getting fonts where umlauts doesn't look terrible
