My suggestion is a function for some kind of shared library. So that if you have xbmc on your computer and your mediasystem (HTPC, Xbox etc.) they share the same library and what you have watched.
This library could be located in a shared folder on a NAS or something like that. Why not on the same machine that the mediafiles are located. But the best is probably if the library has a own folder so that xmbc doesn´t need to have write privileges on all mediafolders.
For performance sake there could be a local library that is updated when something is changed.
