I have a similar setup to you but with movies spread over a couple of NAS drives. I followed jwoolen's guide (post 32) and that seems to have solved all my problems

My original issue which was not being able to stream from my mac had nothing to do with the xbmc version. It was because strict locking was enabled on my OSX 10.6. I had to disable it to fix the problem.
