alternative for Radeon 3870 with VPDAU (Nvidia)?
#1
Hi. For now I have an ATI Radeon 3870 gpu.

But now I have a dual-boot with Ubuntu and I noticed that ATI gpu`s are not very good for multimedia on linux.

So I would like to sell my Radeon 3870 and looking for an alternative from Nvidia (alternative in price and performance).

I read that the 8000 series (and higher) of Nvidia gpu`s support VPDAU, but I read too, that there are also some cards of this series that do not support it (like the 8800GT)?
Is there a list of gpu`s which are recommended for linux (VPDAU)?

The most important thing for the alternative: VPDAU support for as much codecs as possible Nod

edit:
After some searching I found out that it has to be a gpu with feature set c. Are there any Nvidia gpu`s with feature set c AND some game performance?

I really just did my research through wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDPAU

That list has a good view of your features. From there I decided I wanted a GeForce 200 and used this chart:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_200_Series.

The rest is just deciding what performance / price works for you!

On your 1. link I see that (atm) only 3 gpu`s are able to use feature set C (for the desktop):
G 210
GT220
GT240

But I think none of these are able to play some games (I mean as an alternative to my Radeon 3870) Sad

But thank you for your answer Nod
