Blacklist it as you have been told.

I've added lirc_imon to the blacklist file, that didn't work.
However when running 'lsmod | grep lirc' I still see the lirc_imon module, is that normal?

Then you haven't blacklisted it. Please make sure the blacklist is correctly installed. Maybe google it as well. Which OS are you running?

Please provide ls -al /etc/modprobe.d/
